Businesses and consumers navigate new seasonal shipping surcharges

This season brought with it the first ever surcharges from UPS for home-bound packages during the heaviest shipping periods. UPS is forecasting that they will deliver 750M packages during this shopping holiday season. They are estimating that the new surcharges will spread their highest peak shipping days out to at least 17 days, compared to only 11 days in 2016. But as John Haber, CEO of consultants Spend Management Experts, notes “the problem for the shipper is that nobody is able to accurately forecast e-commerce because things are changing so rapidly.” In response to the uncertainty, many retailers are attempting to influence this leveling by influencing consumer expectations with “no-rush shipping” and “economy shipping” options.
